OBJECTIVES

Zero-defect manufacturing / Energy Efficiency / On demand Production / Product Quality Prediction
We have designed an innovative supervision system in the production plant of Poli4Life, a young company devoted to research which offers a highly effective and low-cost polyphenolic concentrate extracted from olives: the best that nature has to offer to counteract the aging process.

The goal of the project was to achieve the elimination of production defects (Zero-Defect Manufacturing) and the energy efficiency of the plant (Energy Efficiency).

The characteristics of the process did not facilitate the achievement of these objectives by means of a standard supervision system as the range of compliance is very narrow and the chemical / physical characteristics of the finished product are heavily influenced by environmental factors (temperature, humidity, lighting), by the characteristics of the raw material and by processing times.

SOLUTIONS

The zero-defect manufacturing and energy efficiency system for the production of polyphenolic extracts
Idea75 developed SPS (Smart Polyphenol manufacturing Supervisor). Through a combination of CPS and IoT technologies, SPS implements a Decision Support System (DSS) related to the production line of polyphenolic extracts at the Poli4Life production site.

It consists of an advanced system for forecasting and evaluating the quality of the product that monitors the production process, detects defects and deviations from the conformity range of the finished product and reacts with automatic adjustments of the machinery settings.

SPS retrieves information from the production line providing suggestions to production line operators on the actions to be taken to improve the quality and energy efficiency of the line based on historical data and process KPIs.

MORE IN DEPTH

Scheme of operation of the system with the previous setup.

Scheme of operation of the system after SPS.

SPS is based on a 3-level architecture fully compliant with BEinCPPS standards:

  • Field: consisting of sensors, actuators and a gateway (SPS-gw) for the acquisition of on-site data and the management of the implementations;

  • Factory: middleware for the management of communications between the production site and the cloud system;

  • Cloud: implementing data storage, processing and a user interface.

Smart Polyphenol manufacturing Supervisor enabled:

  • a reduction in the quantity of product discarded due to non-compliance by 20%;
  • a reduction in the global energy consumption of the production line by 10%;
  • an improvement in the average quality of the finished product by 15%.

Reduction of the amount of product discarded
due to non-compliance before and after the application of SPS.

Energy consumption compared: before and after SPS application.
