PROJECT “GIENAHS – Grasping Innovation in Europe through a closer iNterAction between Heis and Smes”
Project Number: 588071-EPP-1-2017-1-IT-EPPKA2-KA | GRANT AGREEMENT n. 2017-2866/001-001 | ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME – KNOWLEDGE ALLIANCES ACTION

OBJECTIVES

Promote long-term transnational cooperation between universities and SMEs / Contribute to improving the quality of training for industrial researchers / Promote the mobility of researchers in Europe
GIENAHS alliance aims to address the strategic issue of the interaction between Universities and SMEs. Despite being the real driving force of the EU economy, they often encounter considerable difficulties in the management of R&D processes. Innovation plays an important role both for citizens (workers or consumers) and for businesses, thanks to its contribution to speeding up and improving the creation of new products and services. But there can be no innovation without research and education: to reach the investment target of 3% of EU GDP in R&D by 2020, more researchers need to be trained over the next decade, eliminating the obstacles to their mobility. GIENAHS intends to contribute to the objectives of the knowledge alliances by improving the key competences of researchers, providing them with greater mobility opportunities, promoting transnational cooperation between Universities and SMEs and contributing to the “knowledge triangle”, the connection between education, research and innovation.

SOLUTIONS

Promoting the matching between universities and SMEs
GIENAHS fosters the matching process between Universities and SMEs through various steps, including the definition of an EU standard of interaction between small and medium-sized enterprises and universities, to improve territorial competitiveness thanks to the co-creation of knowledge and innovation. The definition of a new methodological approach for the design of “SME-oriented” industrial PhD courses meets the specific needs of European SMEs. The integration of different cultural approaches to R&D and the willingness to test it by designing a new “SME-oriented” industrial PhD program in the manufacturing sector are other key points of the project. A key element requiring the significant involvement of Idea75 is the establishment of an Observatory capable of creating a virtuous and fruitful cooperation between SMEs, universities and researchers, multiplying employment opportunities for industrial research in European SMEs.

MORE IN DEPTH

GIENAHS intends to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the knowledge alliances and in particular:

  • to improve key competences and skills, with an emphasis on their relevance to the labor market by means of greater mobility opportunities for researchers and enhanced cooperation between university and work environments;
  • to promote quality improvement, innovation excellence and internationalization at university level, in particular through enhanced transnational cooperation between universities and SMEs;
  • to improve the quality of training of industrial researchers and company staff, defining reference standards for universities and SMEs;
  • to improve the “knowledge triangle” by linking education, research and innovation.

GIENAHS objectives compared: small and medium-sized enterprises and universities.

GIENAHS promotes the matching process between universities and SMEs through the following steps:

  • definition of an EU standard of interaction between small and medium-sized enterprises and universities to improve territorial competitiveness thanks to the co-creation of knowledge and innovation;
  • definition of a new methodological approach for the design of “SME-oriented” industrial doctorate courses focusing the specific needs of European SMEs that pragmatically allow the integration of different cultural approaches to R&D;
  • testing of the new methodological approach by designing a new “SME-oriented” industrial doctorate course in the manufacturing sector;
  • proposition of an harmonization of industrial doctorate disciplines in Europe, thus concretely promoting the mobility of researchers; therefore, the project committed in the regulation the industrial research doctorate at national level in six partner countries, comparing them according to European provisions;
  • establishment of an Observatory capable of creating virtuous and intensive cooperation between SMEs, universities and researchers, multiplying employment opportunities for industrial research in European SMEs.

“SMEs are the foundation of Europe’s economy, yet just 22% of them are positioned towards innovation. In this perspective, HEIs can and should strengthen them. What’s required is a greater, more structured interaction among HEIs and SMEs and a higher ability of European universities to train industrial researchers and prepare them to deal with the unique cultural and research contexts of SMEs. The GIENAHS project intends to contribute to the growth of innovation culture in European SMEs by developing a smart and common European standard of interaction, fostering a stronger collaboration between HEIs and SMEs through a new methodological approach, where they design industrial PhD pathways.”

Τhe design and establishment of Industrial PhDs in the main focus of GIENAHS project

January 16, 2020

The European project GIENAHS – Grasping innovation in Europe through a closer interaction between HEIs and SMEs, is in progress involving the definition of an innovative methodological approach for the design and establishment of Industrial PhDs in the European universities. GIENAHS project aims to enhance interaction and cooperation between HEIS and SmEs. The Greek partners are the Lab. of Knowledge and Intelligence Computing, University of Ioannina and the Noesis Technologies enterprise. It should be noted that an industrial PhD is a research doctoral programme with industrial orientation. This programme enables the researchers to conduct their research under an innovative research field so that their findings would be adaptable and provide solutions in industrials challenges, supporting the R&D departures of SmEs and other enterprises; while, they will be able to strengthen their competitiveness on a national and European level. In this line, Noesis, the Greek enterprise that participates in the project, introduces a PhD candidate to its workforce who will be able to implement a research programme closely affiliated with Noesis’s operations. To this end Noesis is expected to be improve its financial performance. Translated from an article in the magazine titled “INNOVATION, Research & Technology” issued by the Hellenic National Documentation Centre, Vol. September- November 2019, Issue 117, pp.10-11.

GIENAHS project in the University-Industry Interaction Online Conference 2020

June 17, 2020

GIENAHS project and next steps were presented in the University-Industry Interaction Online Conference, which was realized from 8-11 June 2020, with two contributions. The first one was a poster regarding the new GIENAHS path, presented by prof. Chrysostomos Stylios (University of Ioannina). Prof. Stylios talked about the concept of Industrial PhD and how it can be applied by HEIs in cooperation with SMEs. He also presented the new GIENAHS Industrial PhD path that defines HEI and SME roles and addresses issues regarding compulsory courses, candidate PhD students etc.

You can find more information here.

The second paper was presented by prof. Per Lövsund (Chalmers University of Technology), focusing on the fact that advanced research has a great potential to be significantly increased by a larger amount of collaboration between HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) and SMEs and that a specific aim of GIENAHS is to propose strategies and methods for optimal long-term relations and collaborations including win-win situations for HEIs and SMEs.

“Industrial PhD – A Challenge for both Small/Medium Size Enterprise (SMEs) and Technical Universities (HEIs). GIENAHS Project – Case Study”

June 25, 2020

Industrial doctorate is increasingly encountered in industrially developed countries. This is due to a need to solve production problems or to make new products in medium-sized companies. At European level, the concept is developed differently and the legislation in the field of education is not uniform. The paper aims to present an initiative at European level materialized through the ERASMUS + project. Also, there is a case study conducted within the company EXQUISITE that can very easily be assimilated to a PhD theme.
