OBJECTIVES

The principal aim of ADDOPTML network is to create and validate a holistic machine learning aided, optimum design manufacturing process of civil structures by developing strong synergies among a multi-disciplinary team of academic experts and SMEs from Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands and Spain.
The ADDOPTML overarching aim is to set a new manufacturing paradigm for the construction industry that will enable the rapid deployment of the resilient and adaptive structures of the future that can be rapidly tailored, manufactured and operate under diverse and dynamic environmental conditions.

SOLUTIONS

ADDOPTML sets to greatly advance the current state-of-theart by employing a truly cross-disciplinary research methodology based on machine learning, topology optimisation, structural engineering and automated generative design.
The project takes advantages of ongoing progress in additive manufacturing (AM) technologies including recycled consumables, thus contributing to the European challenge to become the world’s first climate-neutral bloc by 2050. As a primary application, an integrated structural design framework based on AM optimized structural elements for transitional structures will be developed, to address the shortage of hospital units faced by many countries in the pandemic scenario and to develop novel human shelter structure for post-disaster housing.

MORE IN DEPTH

ADDOPTML is structured along the following research objectives:

  • To derive a comprehensive library of data driven constitutive laws for structural materials (metals and concrete) to be employed in additively manufactured civil structures;
  • To develop a high-fidelity yet rapid data driven topology optimisation environment for additively manufactured structural components building on physics rich simulations and experimental testing of scaled models.
  • To provide a fully automated design workflow for additively manufactured structures based on the generative design paradigm;
  • To apply this novel and fully automated design workflow for the case of rapidly deployable steel and concrete structures custom fit for post-disaster sheltering solutions;
  • To deliver design protocols for additively manufactured structural components to be deployed in space applications.

The Network’s goal is to nurture competent researchers, highly trained engineers and scientists. To achieve this, ADDOPTML will put in place research interactions that will expose all involved parties to interdisciplinary research activities taking place in institutions and SMEs from seven EU-MS and one Third Country.

Furthermore, it sets to provide more than 30 early-stage researchers and engineers with the opportunity to be trained by world leading academic and industrial experts and acquire skills in Additive Manufacturing, Engineering Optimization, Machine Learning, and Generative design.
